An upstart burlesque house has sashayed onto the corner of Stanton and Orchard to slap some life into this fratty, grungy
stretch dominated by vanilla destinations like Baby Jupiter and the Orchard Bar. The Slipper Room evokes a pre-Giuliani era
of old-fashioned va-va-voom boisterousness crammed into a glittery, sequined halter top of a room with a little stage at the
rear for showgirls (and boys) to shake their stuff in marabou boas and little else. Figures from downtown's ever-evolving
gay-rooted cabaret scene, whose familiar faces include drag king Murray Hill, monologist Nora Burns, lesbo boy band the Backdoor
Boys and the scantily clad Dazzle Dancers, have all performed here recently. —Andy Bailey

CBGB & OMFUG Address:
315 Bowery St. Phone: 212-982-4052 Description:
The birthplace of American punk rock, CBGB’s is undoubtedly one of the most famous live
music clubs in the country. The letters "CBGB" actually stand for: "COUNTRY BLUEGRASS BLUES," what club owner Hilly Kristal
had intended the club to stage. However, we all know the club took quite a different turn. The OMFUG stands for: OTHER MUSIC
FOR UPLIFTING GORMANDIZERS. Whatever. Anyway, one cannot deny the reputation this place has gained over the years. Everybody
who’s anybody has graced CBGB"s at one point or another, from the Ramones to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones to the Deftones
and many, many more. Located on Bowery Street, the club, believe it or not, is situated under a flophouse. This gives some
idea of what type of atmosphere has always surrounded CBGB’s, an atmosphere that is more than reflected inside the place.
However, much of the crime and residential dissolution has subsided. In fact, the club is nearly a tourist attraction. But
the music scene remains as strong as ever. CBGB’s boasts a tremendous history and a broad repertory of internationally
renowned bands that have and still do play here---all too extensive for just a few hundred words. In short, if you have any
desire to see some of the most original, some of the best, and some of the worst bands in the city, a trip to CBGB’s
should be at the top of your list. For musicians or lovers of music, no trip to NY is complete without a visit to this legendary
venue. Admission: $5. |
